Collin Has an Announcement

I am sure you all have questions. I know I did. This baby was a completely unexpected surprise. It has been a crazy & rough month since finding out. Emotionally & mentally, I have been so drained & worried about everything. My family, what it means for J & I, what it means for Collin, my health. Pregnancy, for me, is not as simple as carrying a baby for nine months. No, for me it means a cerclage, numerous ultrasounds & perinatologist visits, daily Lovenox (blood thinner) injections & weekly progesterone injections. All to keep baby safe & sound inside my belly until it's time to come out. For those who are concerned or curious as to why my pregnancy requires so much intervention, you can read my son Liam's story here.

My pregnancy with Collin was difficult physically & hard on me emotionally. I knew once I saw the, "pregnant," sign flash in my face that this pregnancy would be the same. And this time I was in a completely different place in my personal life. J & I are not married, we live in different states & we both have children from previous relationships. But once I got over the shock & the disappointment in myself & J, I realized how much more love is in my life this time. Collin has been the sweetest big brother already. Clutching his, "baybee pitcher," all the time & taking it everywhere (ultrasounds photo). Exclaiming, "Oh! Baby sewwwww choot!!" whenever anyone will listen. J has been my rock & completely unwavering & supportive. Driving from California to Nevada for every appointment & kissing my tummy reassuringly when we are together. The girls are thrilled & Aiden, well, Aiden is too young to get it yet. There is so much love & support that I can't help but feel like everything will be okay.

J & I have decided to take this on together & move our families in together to create one big, crazy, blended family in J's house in Lucerne Valley, California. We are scared, yes, but happy. I knew shortly after I met J that I would be with him for the rest of my life & I knew I would want children in the future with him. It's happened sooner than I originally planned, but I firmly believe that we are given what God thinks we can handle. I trust Him & His plan for us & I know He has a plan for this child & our family. We both know things are going to be hard. So hard, but we also believe we can conquer whatever is thrown our way.

Collin's Dad & I have been communicating & problem solving through all of this amazingly well. He wasn't excited about the move, of course, but he was wonderful about us working together to create a new schedule for us that would benefit Collin & ensure he got time with his Daddy & Mama & new sibling. I am thankful that Greg & I have maintained a relationship where we can communicate & work together keeping Collin's best interests at heart. It's the hardest thing in the world separating from someone who you created a life with & even harder when that other person is combative or volatile (much like what J & I are struggling with on his end of things), so I am grateful that Greg & I never lose sight of what's important. Collin. And that we have come to an agreement on everything concerning Collin outside of a court room. Because really? No one loves or cares for Collin as much as we do; most certainly not a judge or lawyer whom has never soothed Collin during a long night with a fever,  held him while he blew out his birthday candles or kissed an owie. This is why we have always made sure our efforts stay between us. Even when we disagree, we are committed to finding a solution together. I have much love for the father of my baby boy.

As you have probably gathered, this has been the cause for my Internetland absence as of late. This baby? Is kicking my rear end. Hard. Name the pregnancy symptom, I have it. Severe nausea & dry heaves, fatigue, sore boobs, food aversions, smell aversions, dry skin, acne like whoa, mood swings, nails that grow like they're on steroids, leg hair that rivals a Yeti & emotional outbursts. Oh & PS, my brother in law will be so thrilled that my chin hair has made a reappearance & the encore is no joke.  But, I'm cool. Totally cool. In an OMGISTHATABEARDIMGROWING sort of way.

I am nearing the end of my first trimester & praying to the pregnancy Gods that all of this sickness will disappear with those first weeks. Because sister ain't doing nine months of hairy legged dry heaves.

Of course J & I will be creating some type of pregnancy series, so check back for updates & all the lovely details of my high risk pregnancy. Mmmmm, belly bruises from Lovenox. I bet you can't wait.

For now, we are taking things one day at a time...& today? Today calls for animal fries from In N Out.

Let's Get Real, v2

Collin started preschool today. And I'm supposed to talk about the circle of life & how fast kids grow & all that, but I'm not going to.

Up until today, Collin's dad has been out of work. So when & if Collin needed daycare, it was one day here & there. Though, Collin did go to daycare for a few months when I first started at my company (at the time, his dad was working), but he has never had to go full time in almost a year.

I hate that he has to go. I hate that I can't be there with him to protect him & hold his hand & translate for him when he needs something. I know that I can't be there for everything. I know that he will be fine. I know he will probably end up loving it.

But right now? Right now, it sucks. I never thought Collin's dad & I would be divorced when we had him. I never thought he would have to split his time with us. I don't know, maybe I'm upset because I'm letting go of the future I saw for Collin. I'm sad for him sometimes. I know what it's like to have divorced parents & what it feels like to have to split time between them.

I'm sure most divorced people with kids say this, but Collin's dad & I actually have a pretty good relationship. We have never fought in front of him, we discuss everything together (J didn't meet Collin until I cleared it with Greg first) & we are able to get along & put our own issues aside to figure out what is best for Collin. I think we are really lucky in that aspect. And maybe so is Collin.

I think this is mostly normal. That most of us moms feel this way when we send our kids off to preschool. I think we sort of grieve over the fact that our baby isn't a baby anymore. He is a person. And we can't be there all of the time. And sometimes a bad thing could happen or he will fall & we won't be there to kiss it better. We know we are the best caretakers for our children, so to trust other people...is hard.

I'm just being all sad about him today. I miss him so much when I'm at work. I wish we could just have adventures & hang out everyday.

I know I'll be fine. I'll adjust to this. So will he.

But today? Today is for the ugly cry on the drive to work & for calling to check on him during my lunch break, secretly hoping he would be crying for me & then being both sad & elated to find out he has been doing just fine all day.

My Little Toddler Man

Seriously, I'm positive I have the coolest toddler. Like, in the world. For the most part, he's pretty well behaved. I think I can count on one hand the amount of tantrums we have had. Does he get upset that things don't go his way sometimes? Sure. But he is pretty even tempered...this is something he gets from his Daddy. Greg has always been mellow & even tempered, so I'm really happy Collin got that from him. While he has an awesome temperament, he is still so excited about everything. He just loves life. he gasps loudly & screams, "MAMA!!! MONSTER TRUCK!" hen we see a big truck on the road. He just appreciates & loves little things. Like when he gets a piece of chocolate, "I yove chok-it!" or if he really likes a particular meal, "Mama, I YOVE wice & chik-in!" And sometimes? Out of nowhere, he just tells me, "Mama, I happy."

He is seriously just the coolest, sweetest little kid. I'm not saying I don't deal with misbehavior or bad days, but I sincerely am so grateful Collin is the way he is. It gives me hope & affirmation that I am doing good. And I need that considering I usually feel like he's been cheated out of a real family & that he has a Mama who is alllllwwaaayyyssss doing boring grown up stuff.

App Happy Friday: 360 (iPhone App Reviews)

So...this is new, eh?!?! I started this last year, but never went anywhere with it because of everything that was going on in my life at the time. Now I am back with it & this time i'm prepared to rock the shit out of some app reviewing for ya'll.

Remember my vlog about guilty pleasures? In it, I talk about my obsession with iPhone apps. Specifically camera apps. I can't even organize the damn camera apps into folders because I HAVE THAT MANY. Seriously. I was one of the FIRST people to get an Instagram...the DAY they came out. I don't think I'm alone, either. I believe Mamas use their phones way more than people realize. Our trusty iPhones are so handy! Need a recipe? NBD, I got my Pinterest right here in my back pocket. Let me just pull up my, "food," board & we can get our Paula Deen on in no time. Little Billy doing something cute? KAPOW, phone out of your pocket like lightning. ANd now you can edit & add a vintage filter to the photo. I don't know about you, but I'm a regular Andy Warhol thanks to my iPhone.

I am always perusing the app store for new apps & after three years of owning an iPhone, I have a good chunk of money invested in apps by now. People frequently ask me what apps to use, which I feel are best, which ones are worth the money, etc. So, this will be my weekly guide for all things iPhone app related.

Welcome to App Happy Friday, Edition One!!! Holler.

PS: No one pays me to do these. I'm just sharing my app knowledge/opinions.

I bought this app one day when I was at the beach with Collin. I wanted to get a good panoramic shot & I'd heard there was an app that would do that for you. I bought this one for $0.99, but I almost never use this.

I think it would be great to have on hand if you were planning a family trip...or maybe if you have more than one kid. I know it came in handy today when I wanted to get everyone at the table when we went out to eat with my Dad.

Below are a couple of examples I took today with the app. You can do a full 360 or just as much of the room as you want. I guess it is pretty cool, but I just don't really find the need/desire to use it that often.

No one has paid me for this review. All opinions on App Happy Friday are strictly my own views & only to share my thoughts with interested parties.

Currently via Sometimes Sweet

Danielle from Sometimes Sweet does these simple posts from time to time. I wanted to follow suit. I think it's an awesome, fun, quick way to update.

Currently...

What I'm listening to... So much 311 Pandora station. When I'm at work, it gets me in a groove & through my day. When I'm home Sade's station.

What I'm eating... Basically I've been living off of Nutella. I kid, I kid. J made some awesome chicken tacos the other night. I bought some raw apple cider vinegar last night to add to my daily vitamins. More on that later, though.

What I'm watching... Not much. My DVR is full right now. When J is in town, we don't do much TV watching...& I honestly just don't have time. I did watch the episode of Guiliana & Bill where they find out their surrogate is pregnant & basically cried myself into dehydration.

Thinking about... Serious right now? I'm a single Mama. At any given moment, I'm thinking about 28 different things simultaneously.

Loving... The motivation bug that hit me. I've been really getting back into the groove of blogging & it's awesome being back in the community of Mamas.

Anticipating... J moving into his house (circumstances have him staying at his Mom's for now). May 15th he will have it & I'm excited to help him renovate it whenever I have free weekends to drive down there.

Feeling thankful for... I've been really proud of myself lately. I know that sounds terribly conceited, but I am prideful in all that I've accomplished since Collin's Dad & I separated. I look around at my (albeit tiny) apartment & I'm just God damned proud that I'm the one responsible for all of this. Me. The roof over Collin's & my head, the food in our fridge, the occasional ice cream night. I'm doing it. Alone. I'm succeeding. By myself. And I rule! It's a great feeling knowing that you can provide for your kid & that in circumstances that are less than ideal, you can overcome.

Mama's Always Last

In my life, there are many people who need me for various things. I work full time, I mom full time, I am a housekeeper, a taxi driver, a chef, a sister (did I mention my little sister is pregnant), a daughter, a girlfriend, an ex wife, a student, a freelance writer, a master dish washer (can I get a whoop whoop for my Foreman grill?!?!), a blogger, a chino folder extraordinaire, etc, etc, etc. It has just been a way of life for me to place myself, being Holly, at the end of that list. That's just how it has to be & that's just how life is. Everyone else's needs come before mine (especially Collin's) & that's fine with me. Seriously, I'm not complaining or looking for people to feel sorry for me. I think this just happens when you become a Mom. I think your brain just makes you work hard to make sure everyone is happy & taken care of.

At any given moment, our mom brains are in a million different places: Collin had a little cough this morning, I'd better text to see how he is doing now. OMG, I have so much laundry to do when I get home. Crap! I forgot to take out chicken to thaw for dinner tonight! What's in the freezer that I can whip up? Did I water the plants before I left this morning? I need to remember to get gas on my way home. It's getting warmer, I need to get Collin some sandals & shorts. J is coming in this weekend, I need to make sure I have Guayaki in the fridge for him & set up Aiden's crib. Greg needed Collin's info for the new insurance, I need to get that over to him. We have a meeting at work on Thursday at 3PM, I can't forget my notes.

It's a Mom thing. I am completely sure of this.

This past weekend was J's birthday. He had been working so hard all week (coal shipments = back breaking work for him) & I knew his feet had to have been sore & aching from being stuck in his work boots. I knew he had had a pedicure at least once before from a previous conversation we'd had. What perfect timing for a birthday pedicure!!!

Of course, we did them together. We sat in chairs next to one another & we happily relaxed & talked...joked about what color he would get for his toes...nearly fell asleep in those massage chairs (those massage chairs, people!!!) as our nail technicians rubbed & lotioned up our feet.

Once we were done, J told me repeatedly how great his feet felt & naturally, as I do whenever I give anyone a gift, I asked him no less than 17 times if his feet felt good & how he liked his birthday gift. He did.

And then, as I looked at my toes that evening for the thousandth time & internally thought about what an amaze foot model I'd be, "Just look at those perfect toes!," (sister, don't even pretend that you don't do that after a pedicure), I realized I'd given myself a gift, too.

My pretty, freshly polished feet had given this Mama a sweet little boost of confidence & a much needed hour of relaxation & me time. I was revamped & energized & remembering what it is like to make sure I am taken care of first. You remember? Back in the days when you were your only priority or care? It felt good. Really good.

And I realized, it's okay to do this once in awhile. It's okay for me to focus on....me & get a pedicure. In fact, I need to do these things for myself sometimes. I get so burnt out running around doing everything for everybody & that sometimes frustrates me & makes me short with people or angry. This was such a great reminder to slow down. Enjoy myself & remember that I need to take care of me before I can take care of anyone else.

You Guys? Thomas is REAL!!!

If you know my son, Collin, you know that Thomas the train is basically his sole reason for walking this planet. So, when I found out that Thomas was OMGCOMINGHERE?!?!?! I wanted to take him. Sadly, prices to see him are, well, pricey. Go figure. So, I decided I would outsmart that greedy train & just take Collin to look & take in the wonder & amazement that is Thomas the Train. But unfortunately for me, the asshole train won't let you on the grounds without a ticket.

Last night, when I found this out, I for reals started crying. Full on tears, ugly face, mascara on the cheeks, hyperventilating crying. It wasn't just Thomas. It was a fun day with his Mama. I don't get a lot of days for just FUN. Days where I can say yes to everything. Want to see Thomas? Done. Want an ice cream? Done. Want to blow the $6 whistle for hours at a time? Ok.

I'm a single Mom. I work all day & all week. When I get home, I am cleaning or cooking or catching up on laundry or cleaning up after dinner or changing Collin's peed on bedsheets or stressing about how I'll make it through the month financially or worrying about the upcoming hospital bill from the tongue incident or giving Collin a bath or telling him not to put food in his nose or telling him to stop picking his nose or telling him not to throw toys at the wall or telling him to put away his books that he tossed all over the floor or putting Thomas the Train in the DVD player for the 17th time that evening.

Basically, single parenting is hard. And it sucks working all day & then coming home to my second shift & working until bedtime & then working again doing freelance/side/school work after bedtime. I work three given shifts any given day & that doesn't leave much of me for Collin. I'm sometimes a total drag & I hate not always being able to spend the time with him that I used to when I stayed at home. I feel so sad for him. I never wanted him to have this life, but I also know that I am doing my best by him. And when something like Thomas happens...& I can't give that small piece of happy to him, I lose my shit. Because it means (to me) that all my working? All of my being a drag? Is for nothing (just how I feel sometimes).

Naturally, I called Jacob sobbing. Because it was the end of the world. Duh. And then I took my pout party to FB. I just wanted the whole world to feel sorry for me. I was venting & sort of behaving like a brat. Which is why when an amazingly selfless & sweet person called me (I ignored the number because I didn't recognize it) & then texted me offering to buy the tickets, I refused. I wasn't looking for a handout & in reality, I knew Collin would survive not seeing Thomas. But this person was persistent & refused to back down, bought me FOUR tickets, so that I could take J & Aiden too & then THANKED ME for helping their karma. I will never be able to show this person how this gift made me feel. I was sobbing & dry heaving all over the place. It was more than just the God damned train. It was a fun day. A day where Collin didn't have a Mama who was working or cleaning or any of those other ors. It was a day Mama & Collin could play & be free & meet Collin's very favorite train in the world.

This person knows who they are & I could never repay you for the feelings & memories you gave us today. This is the only way I know how to pay you back. With the look on my son's face & the excitement in his voice when he saw Thomas.

I used my cell phone a lot because we were all over the place. They had all these different stations where you could get tattooed, color, play & all kinds of other stuff. Anyways, here are the cell phone pics. So happy sometimes that I have this piece of technology. The last one is a gem.

Dude.Was.DUN. D-U-N.

I swear to God, you guys, this was one of the best days of my life. I cried, even, when I saw how stoked Collin was to see the REAL LIFE THOMAS. HE'S REAL!!!!!

Also? I didn't get one single picture of Thomas the whole day. I mean, what the HELL, Holly?!

First ER Trip

I was originally going to talk about the fun weekend we had. My Ma had this really huge Easter party at her place & we had all the kids, so they got to go. They swam in her pool (heated), ate cupcakes, hunted for Easter eggs & all that jazz. It was seriously awesome. Then, at the end after we had gathered our gaggle of kids (we had J's three plus Collin), Collin took a nosedive when he was running with a giant sized Lightning McQueen thingy in his hand & bit his tongue in the gnarliest way.

Screaming, blood & adults swooping in to scoop him up ensued. Mama freaked the freak out. My Dad just recently told me how his friend's son was jumping on a couch & LITERALLY BIT PART OF HIS TONGUE OFF. Naturally, that's ALL I kept seeing in my head.

Luckily, my Ma & Seester both have medical backgrounds & as best as they could through the blood, drool & tears, assessed that he didn't need to go to the hospital.

And then J & I had the mother of all tongue-bitten-toddler nights. Forreals. And Collin's tongue looked like this in the morning. Still bloody....& gaping.

I sent that pic out to my Ma, Aunt & Seester for advice & the consensus was that we should see a doctor. Even if only for antibiotics in case of infection. I put in a call to his ped & they literally took forever to get back to me, so I decided to head to the ER. The one by me is fairly new & there is usually no wait. So, like any grown ass woman does, I called me Mommy & asked her to come with me.

The doc scolded me for not bringing him sooner because he would have had stitches! What the...? ON A TONGUE?! But since it was over 12 hours, she didn't know what kind of bacteria was in there & didn't want to close it all up in there, so the decision was to let it be open. We have to give him antibiotics because he was eating dirt not long beforehand & because the mouth carries so much bacteria. Other than that, just lots of cold things, popsicles & pretty much letting him eat what he asks for because it's a friggin miracle to get him to chew on anything.

When we got home, J put on a movie for him & set him up in our little chair. I let him mess around on my phone & in a sad attempt to stay awake, he kept moving into different positions. He ended up on the floor, phone in hand, passed the eff out.

I'm totally babying him right now & even gave him the fancy blanket that only us grown ups can use. I don't even care. If that helps him feel even a tiny bit better, it's worth it. My poor little honey badger. He don't even care.
